Lighting the Way: Young People Preserving Memories
/At Asian Resources, Inc, something remarkable is unfolding. Seven young people listened and recorded the stories of our elders — told from their memories, struggles, and triumphs.
This is SHINE: Sharing Histories to Inspire, Nurture, and Empower Generations. Funded by an APIs RISE Fund grant of $6,000, the project created a bridge between generations, one story at a time through oral histories.
Young people learned how to ask questions to draw out stories and skillfully use media tools. Their education was when they sat down with Hach Yasumura, Lilia Rivera, Nancy Woo, Darrel Woo, and Roger Fong—community pillars whose lived experiences formed the bedrock of the AANHPI community's collective memory.
Now, youth leaders are weaving the conversations into a digital archive, ensuring the narratives are preserved and shared across the community.
In April the community plans to gather for a Youth Film Fest to witness to power of intergenerational connections. SHINE was not just about leadership training but about honoring our history and inspiring our young people.
