We have the power to get our communities counted! As of today, April 11, 47.8 percent of households in California and 52.6% in Sacramento county have completed the census! Due to the shelter in place order, the U.S. Census Bureau has extended the deadline to complete the census questionnaire to August 14.

One of the lessons learned from my Grandma and Ma about rice was that every grain mattered, so never waste it. This same principle applies to the 2020 Census: Everyone matters, and you need to be counted.

Our efforts will benefit not only the Punjabi community, but the larger API community members who live in the hard-to-count areas to learn about the census so that they will overcome language and other barriers to participate in the census. 

“It’s important for the API community in this region to become more civically engaged and we strive to carry out the vision of our founders to grow the next generation of API leaders” says Mona Tawatao, Co-Chair of APIs RISE Fund in an interview with the Sierra Health Foundation.
